Edith Mary Serhan passed peacefully at home in the early morning on March 17. She was born in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada to Beatrice Mary Keeley and Joseph Patrick Gorman.
As a young girl, Edith had a passion for learning which led her to Brescia College where she graduated with the Governor General's Gold Medal for Excellence. At a church social, Edith boldly walked up to Bill Serhan and asked him to dance. They were married in 1948 and continued dancing for almost 60 years.
They moved to Long Beach with their four children in 1961. Together they opened and ran retail stores, Serhan's Fashions. The couple became active members at St. Bartholomew Church where Edith served on the Woman's Council. She also volunteered at Kettering Elementary and at the election polls.
Edith was known for her strong faith and her unfailing positive spirit. She loved to swim, read, take daily walks, and was loved by her neighbors. She enjoyed socializing with friends at the El Dorado Park Senior Center exercise group and luncheons. Edith's greatest joy was being with her family whether for a great celebration or a quiet sit in the backyard. Edith lived life to the fullest for 96 years and now she is dancing in heaven with Bill.
A special thanks to her god-child Mary for her loving companionship and to Ginny for her true devotion as an excellent caregiver. She is survived by her children- Patrick, Margaret (Michael) Springer, Vincent, Anne Marie McLaughlin; her niece- Mary Gilmore; her grandchildren- Sierra (Sean) McMahon, Elizabeth, Warren, Claire, Nicholas, Luke William; and her great-grandchild- Shaeleigh.
A private mass will be held in Edith's honor at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church, and she will be interred next to her husband at All Souls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local library in her name.
