June 21, 1930 – September 24, 2014
Longtime Long Beach resident, Lurene Witten, passed away on Wednesday, September 24. She is predeceased by her devoted husband, Ralph Witten, often known as "Bill", whom she met at Long Beach City College. She and Bill enjoyed dancing together through fifty seven years of marriage. One of Lurene's greatest joys in life was reading. As a child, because her father was career Navy, Lurene lived in many different cities across the country and changed schools many times. Each time they would arrive in a new city, she and her mother would visit the neighborhood library so they would have new books to read. Lurene loved sharing her love of reading with others and especially enjoyed teaching reading to first graders in the Long Beach Unified School District, where she taught for twenty-nine years. She was a voracious reader even into her last days, sometimes using a magnifying glass to see the words. Lurene was an active member of Belmont Heights United Methodist Church for over fifty years, serving in various leadership and volunteer roles, especially in roles that served children. She also loved singing in the church choir with several of her dearest friends. She is survived by her brother Ted Ford, sisters Julie Ford Williams and Catherine Ford, daughter Anne Witten Fried (Jerry), son Ted Witten (Katrina), daughter Amy Witten (Joe Puckett), and six grandsons, Robert (Ashley) and Michael Donnelly, Edward, Anthony and William Witten, and Joey Puckett. She is also survived by a cherished great granddaughter, Nora Jane. The memorial service for a celebration of her life will be Sunday, October 19 at 2 PM at Belmont Heights United Methodist Church, 317 Termino Avenue, Long Beach, California.
