LONG BEACH, CA.

GLENN THORNTON, AGE 84, OF LONG BEACH CALIFORNIA, PASSED AWAY ON FEBRUARY 5, 2015 AFTER A 4-MONTHBATTLE TO RECOVER FROM COMPLICATIONS RESULTING FROM ELECTIVE LUNG SURGERY.
GLENN WAS BORN IN SAMPSON COUNTY IN NEWTON GROVE, NORTH CAROLINA ON OCTOBER 3, 1930, THE ELDEST OF 8 CHILDREN BORN TO ROYAL THORNTON AND NANCY THELMA (RAYNOR) THORNTON.
HE GREW UP ON A TOBACCO AND COTTON FARM IN RURAL NORTH CAROLINA UNTIL AT THE AGE OF 17, HE ENLISTED IN THE UNITED STATES NAVY. A VETERAN OF THE KOREAN WAR, GLENN SERVED IN THE NAVY FOR 22 YEARS, RETIRING IN 1968.
POST-NAVY RETIREMENT, GLENN'S ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS WERE REALIZED WHEN HE STARTED AN INDEPENDENT AUTO REPAIR BUSINESS HERE IN LONG BEACH, BELMONT AUTO REPAIR INC. ON 4TH ST. HE STILL WORKED AT "THE SHOP" UP UNTIL GOING IN FOR THE SURGERY ON SEPTEMBER 22, 2015, THAT ULTIMATELY RESULTED IN HIS PASSING. THE FAMILY STILL OWNS AND OPERATES THE BUSINESS (45 YEARS) THAT GLENN ALWAYS SAW AS HIS LEGACY.
GLENN WAS DEDICATED TO ALL OF HIS FAMILY. HE IS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE, PHYLLIS (BRANDENBERG) THORNTON, HIS THREE CHILDREN, CONNIE THORNTON-REED (AND RICHARD REED). PAMELA THORNTON AND ANTHONY GLENN THORNTON, AND HIS GRANDCHILDREN, NICOLE MARIE THORNTON-EARNSHAW AND CASEY GLENN THORNTON.
HE IS PREDECEASED BY HIS PARENTS, ROYAL AND THELMA, AND HIS BROTHER JIMMY THORNTON. HE IS ALSO SURVIVED BY HIS SIX REMAINING SIBLINGS AND THEIR SPOUSES AND TOO MANY NIECES AND NEPHEWS AND THEIR CHILDREN TO MENTION HERE.
HE ALWAYS MADE IT HIS PRIORITY TO VISIT EVERYONE IN NORTH CAROLINA ALMOST EVERY YEAR. THERE WILL BE A CELEBRATION OF LIFE FOR GLENN ON MARCH 29, 2015, 1-5PM, AT THE LAKEWOOD COUNTRY CLUB FOR THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO ATTEND. IN ADDITION, A CELEBRATION OF LIFE WILL BE HELD FOR HIM IN NEWTON GROVE, NORTH CAROLINA JUNE 5, 2015, AT THE THORNTON FAMILY REUNION. FINALLY, GLENN WILL BE INTERRED WITH FULL MILITARY HONORS AT THE RIVERSIDE MEMORAIL VETERAN'S CEMETERY LATER IN THE SUMMER.
